Artist’s Statement
I think art is a miracle. To take colored pigments and apply it to a surface creating an image that communicates and gives value or pleasure to others is an astonishing accomplishment.
When a simple lead pencil can transform a sheet of paper into a treasured and valuable work of art, that is a miracle. This is the reason I became an artist. It is my desire to always improve upon my work and to astonish the viewer with visions that let them see what I see and feel what I feel. If I can do this, then I have succeeded as an artist.
I want my work to look fresh and confident. A good way I have learned to do this is to paint fast and paint often, or to limit the time I spend on a painting. I like the look, smell and feel of oil paints. They dry slowly and I can take my time with a painting or work fast, doing a painting in one sitting.
My favorite subject matter is still life because I can explore textures, lighting effects and interesting objects that tell a story or present a mystery for the viewer. I also like to paint human character portraits because there is such a large and variety of human subject matter and they are the most challenging and interesting subject of all.
My current work involves impressions and glimpses of things in my world that move me in some personal way even if it is a very simple object or scene. If it is a vase, it is because I love the shape of the vase, and the way its shadow is cast across the table or on the wall.
I want to simplify impressions I see and put them down on canvas as quickly as possible without going into a lot of detail. My art tells the story of my visual exploration into this amazing three dimensional reality I see every day that to me, seems like a miracle. My art is my show and tell. It not only says, “Look what I see!” it says, “Look how I see it.”
PRICING AND PURCHSES:
I creat small, medium and large paintings ranging from 6 inches square to 24 X 36. (Anything larger than that I call Xtra large.) Most of what you will see on this blog are the smaller paintings because I can scan them for posting. I live in a remote area and so I do not have any of my paintings in commercial galleries. I try to keep my prices low and reasonable and selling direct helps me to do that.
